Week One
The Candle of Hope (small white votive)
Scripture
- Isaiah 9:2, 6-7 (NLT): The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine... For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
- Romans 15:12-13 (NLT): And Isaiah said, “The heir to David’s throne will come, and he will rule over the Gentiles. They will place their hope on him.” I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Explanation for Kids
- This candle represents Hope. We light it to remind us of the hope that the coming of Jesus brings. The people were waiting for a Savior, and God’s promise of light and hope was fulfilled in Jesus. As we light this first candle, we think about the hope we have in God’s promises for His people and the return of Jesus.
